What Is Facial Plastic Surgery?

Facial plastic surgery is a name given to all surgical procedures that include a series of cosmetic or reconstructive surgical procedures performed on the face at the same time or at different times, sometimes together with neck lift.

Facial plastic surgery is performed by plastic surgeons (generally), otolaryngology (ENT) surgeons (especially because they have more command of the anatomical structures in the deep parts of the ear, nose and throat in the head and neck region), maxillofacial surgeons (especially those who are experienced in facial and maxillofacial surgery),  ophthalmologists (particularly facial surgical procedures involving the eye and its surroundings), and dermatologists (minor surgical procedures related to the face).

While some of the surgeons who perform facial plastic surgery may be good at the whole face, some of them may be better at only one or more of the following surgical procedures, as they can be performed by different surgical branches as mentioned above:

  • Rhinoplasty (nose aesthetics)
  • Neck lift
  • Facelift
  • Eyebrow lift
  • Blepharoplasty (upper and lower eyelid lift surgery)
  • Otoplasty (ear surgery)
  • Chin augmentation or reduction

What Is Facelift Surgery?

Facelift is one of the first surgical procedures that comes to mind regarding facial surgery, which we mentioned above, and it is a surgical procedure that is generally applied to women over 50 years of age.

Facelift, also known as rhytidectomy and platysmaplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that aims to lift up and pull back the skin by using different cosmetic surgery methods to make the face tighter and smoother.

Although facelift surgery is performed with some different procedures, it is basically designed to reduce saggy or sagging skin around the lower half of the face (mainly jowl) and neck.

Facelift surgery is an expensive cosmetic surgery procedure, its results cannot be guaranteed and it has some risks. Therefore, we recommend that you think carefully and consult your doctor before making a decision.

How is Facelift Surgery Performed?

Facelift is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Sometimes (in mini facelift) it can be done with local anaesthesia and sedation.

Although there are a number of different methods used by specialist cosmetic and plastic surgeons, the facial surgeon may basically perform to some or more of the following applications:

  • It can be made incisions above the hairline in the temples that extend in front of your ear, under your earlobe, and behind the ear
  • If the chin line is also lifted, incisions can be made under the chin.
  • The excess facial skin can be removed.
  • It can be pulled the remaining skin backward and upward before stitching the facial skin into its new position
  • Sometimes it can be shaped the face, by redistributing the fat and connective tissue on the face.

After a Facelift, the face is bandaged to minimise bruising and swelling. Facelift usually takes 2 to 3 hours and requires a hospital stay of at least one night. Post-operative pain may occur, pain can be reduced with painkillers.

Types of Facelift Surgeries

Although facelift surgery has different surgical procedures, the most preferred ones are as follows:

  • Traditional facelift
  • MACS (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) facelift
  • SMAS (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System or SMAS layer) facelift
  • Deep Plane Facelift
  • Mini facelift
  • Midi facelift
  • Endoscopic Facelift (Key-Hole Surgery)

You can find more information about these surgical procedures below.

Your Facial Surgeon will advise you on which method is most suitable and which will give you the best results.

Many people who want to completely get rid of wrinkles on their face and neck and to rejuvenate prefer to combine facelift and neck lift surgeries. It is reported that patients who have this combination look 10 years younger.

Who is Suitable for A Facelift?

A facelift is generally not recommended for people under the age of 30. Deep lines, wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin are a result of the ageing process and usually begin after the age of 40 and gradually increase and become more pronounced over time. Although such age-related changes can be eliminated by non-surgical methods at the beginning, their effects are usually short-lived and even as age progresses, these methods become unable to meet expectations and lose their effectiveness. In this case, you may have no other option but surgical methods. Therefore, facelift surgery gives the best results for men and women between the ages of 40-70, when signs of ageing begin to appear and become widespread.

Facelift surgery is a personal and cosmetic decision. After the examination (after physical or online consultation), the facial surgeon will tell you whether you are suitable for facelift surgery and which surgical procedure, according to your current skin condition and desired aesthetic results. However, before you decide to have a facelift, you may be asked to meet the following qualifications

What is the Purpose of Facelift?

Face Lift surgery is basically performed to smooth the skin, to rejuvenate a tired-looking face appearance, and to reduce the lines and wrinkles that appear on the skin (usually around the eyes, mouth and jaw line).

With face lift, it is aimed to gain the following features:

  • Makes you look younger
  • Makes you feel rejuvenated and refreshed
  • Allows you to wear garments with lower necklines without having to hide behind a scarf/high-neck top
  • Allows you to apply makeup more easily
  • Increases your self-confidence and self-esteem

Things to Consider Before Facelift Surgery

If it has been decided that you are suitable for a facelift, we recommend that you ask yourself the following questions and think twice before having the surgery

Facelift Surgery in Turkey in Istanbul Turkey Before&After

facelift before after

Turkey is among the most popular countries in the field of aesthetic surgery in the last 10-15 years (not counting the COVID-19 period). While aesthetic surgery patients originally came from European countries due to its proximity and affordable prices, in the last few years, Turkey has become a centre of attraction for medical tourists due to its affordable price, despite travel expenses from distant parts of the world. One of the most important factors for medical tourists to prefer Turkey is the affordable prices. However, other important factors in their preference are that they receive from our plastic surgeons who are experienced in their fields (most of them have membership certification of the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, and the American Board of Plastic Surgery) in hospitals with the latest technology (European and American standards) where high quality postoperative care services are provided.

In order for you to reach these health services more easily, luxurious comfortable transfer between the airport-hotel-hospital and optional super-luxury accommodation close to the hospital (usually it is free in your treatment package, but sometimes it is offered to you with an extra fee at a very affordable price) are provided.

Turkey and especially Istanbul have achieved great success in face lift surgeries in recent years. Although it varies between EUR 3500 and 10000 depending on the surgical procedure performed in Turkey, you can get this service for an average of EUR 4500-5000 in luxury hospitals at European standards. Your hospital stays (usually 2 stays for facelift surgery), anaesthesia, operating room, nursing and care services (only at hospital) and all your medications are included in your treatment fee (European countries usually charge extra for these services).

Why You Should Perform Facelift Surgery in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is one of the cities with highly experienced doctors and high quality and well-equipped hospitals with very good nursing and care services in facelift surgery as mentioned above. For this reason, Istanbul has become a centre of attraction for many medical tourists for facelift surgery in recent years, thanks to its well-equipped hospitals at European standards and experienced face plastic surgeons (most of them have membership certification of the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, and the American Board of Plastic Surgery). Of course, the most important factor in this is that the prices are advantageous. As we mentioned above, a health service in European standards can be obtained at a very affordable price.

Istanbul also attracts a lot of attention due to its historical places, bazaars, and entertainment centres. When all these advantageous features come together, it becomes one of the most preferred places for facelift surgery. Istanbul offers many opportunities to its visitors and facelift surgery patients before the surgery. They can take a boat tour on the Bosphorus or visit the cultural heritage of Istanbul. If they wish, they can enjoy Istanbul by staying in luxurious 5-star hotels with Bosphorus views.

Another advantage of Istanbul is its advanced transportation facilities. With these means of transportation, you can go to any part of Turkey you want. It is also very easy to reach Istanbul from abroad through international airports.
